Introduction

In a multitude of adventure video games, one of the games that stand out is Monsters, Inc. Scare Island. This game was developed by Disney Interactive and Artificial Mind and Movement, released in 2002, for PCs, PS1 and PS2.

Story and game concept

Monsters, Inc. Scare Island is based on Disney’s/Pixar’s Monsters, Inc. animated movie, but it doesn’t actually follow the story of it. The game borrows the characters from the movie and the concept of scaring children. The story is quite simple. Sulley and Mike decide to become top scares so they sign up for the Scare course on Scare Island. In order to graduate they have to scare nerves—the robot substitute for children, collect coins and avoid being hit by pesky toys. The game takes place in three different areas on Scare Island, each featuring four levels. Each area has its own theme: the city, the desert and the winter. Apart from those, there are three more race levels that can be unlocked by collecting the bronze medals in each area. The game difficulty increases progressively and this is a good thing. One thing worth mentioning is that you can’t complete one level in one turn, because there are some conditions you have to fulfill in order to unlock another part of the level. I like this idea since it allows you to come back and retest your skills in a familiar environment. However, there is no multiplayer feature in this game.

Gameplay

As far as gameplay is concerned, after you take control over Mike or Sulley you can freely explore the island where you find the gates for the level areas. In the beginning, you’ll only have access to one gate. In order to unlock the other ones, you’ll have to win medals. The way the game actually works is shown in an orientation level that you can’t skip. So there are no worries that you don’t know what to do in the game. A “very enthusiastic guide” teaches you how to jump, attack, an action not encouraged at Monster Inc., smash boxes using different moves, collect coins and primordial ooze—a very important thing in the game that allows you to fulfill the Fright Meter and scare nerves by performing different moves. You win medals throughout the levels by scarring a certain number of nerves and by collecting a certain number of coins. Keep in mind that not all nerves get frightened that easily and in order to be able to scare them you’ll have to get the right level on the Fright Meter. Overall, the gameplay is fun and engaging.

Graphics

The graphics of Monsters, Inc. Scare Island are not very impressive, but not bad either. The characters are pretty low detailed and they sometimes look a bit too choppy. Other than that, they’re okay. What I like the most about the graphics is the level design. Although the levels are low detailed as well, the landscape and objects look very pleasing and entertaining. The fact that the game takes place in different settings, like the desert with the pyramids and the cold winter with ice and caves keeps you engaged until the end of the game. A change of view is always welcomed so players won’t get bored. The animations look fine and the fact that they’re a bit rough reminds us that we’re playing a game. As for the scare moves, I think some of them are a bit silly.

Music and Sound

The music throughout Monsters, Inc. Scare Island is really nice and pulls you completely into the game. It’s very playful and entertaining. As for the sounds, I can say that they’re well chosen for the game, far from being scary and I like this. They’re fun and they don’t get on your nerve. The same thing can be said about the voice acting.

Conclusion

All in all, I think Monsters, Inc. Scare Island is a game worth playing. The idea and execution fell in very nicely and managed to reach the goal of a game: to entertain you. A fun game is a good game, in my opinion. My rating for the game is 9 out of 10. I always dreamed for a sequel to Monsters, Inc. Scare Island, but even now it’s not too late.
